1.3 Instructional Strategies

“Instructional strategies are specifications for selecting and sequencing events and activities within a lesson” (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 31).

Making Apple Cider
Edtech 502 - Virtual Field Trip

This is a virtual field trip. This virtual field trip guides students through the process of making apple cider. The field trip is divided into five independent activities. The activities, in order from left to right, are Apple Seeds, Apple Seedlings, Apple Blossoms, Apples, and Apple Cider. There is a page assistant to guide preliterate children through the virtual field trip. Each of the five activities include a self-checking quiz to check for learning.

Farm Animal or Wild Animal?
Edtech 502 - Interactive Concept Map

This is a page concept map lesson. The text, and the narrator, guides the events from top to bottom. The first half is all about farm animals and is followed by the instruction on wild animals. Following the instruction is a self checking quiz.

These artifacts are created to be used in a specific sequence. Guiding learners through the sequences, each of these artifacts have a narrator. The virtual field trip also sequences the events by sorting them from left to right on the menu bar at the top of the page.

I have learned from these artifacts to be more mindful of the order of events and activities within a lesson and especially within electronic media. I use these concepts when creating my classroom website and writing my classroom newsletter. For my website, I order the tabs from left to right according to the order I want the visitor to view them. My newsletters are sorted so the most important information is near the top.
