5.3 Formative and Summative Evaluation

“Formative evaluation involves gathering information on adequacy and using this information as a basis for further development. Summative evaluation involves gathering information on adequacy and using this information to make decisions about utilization” (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 57).

Digital Publishing In Kindergarten
Edtech 503 - ID Project

Digital Publishing In Kindergarten is the final project in Edtech 503. This project is an instructional design project titled "Publishing a Digital Book in Kindergarten". In this project, I created a unit of instruction using Instructional Systems Design. The project was broken down into several parts. These parts cover the instructional design process from analysis through evaluation.
The part six of the project includes the formative evaluation plan. The formative evaluation plan includes one-to-one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field trial evaluation. The formative evaluation plan was to use one-to-one evaluation to choose a digital publishing program because there are many programs to evaluate and this type of evaluation accommodates many trials. When a digital publishing program is chosen, then the evaluation moved on to small group tests and field trials.

Evaluator's Program Description: PlanbookEdu
Edtech 505 - Week 6 Project

This artifact is the Evaluator's Program Description (EPD) for evaluation of PlanbookEdu. The EPD is the first step in evaluating a program. This artifact is an example of summative evaluation because it evaluates the program against a set of predetermined questions. In this case, the EPD is the first step in evaluating PlanbookEdu with the following four questions.

  • Does Planbookedu track CCSS’s for individual lessons?
  • Does Planbookedu track which CCSS’s still need to be covered?
  • Will Planbookedu make checking planbooks easier for administrators?
  • Can administration track which CCSS’s have been taught?
